Foundations: Understanding Your Money Story

Every person carries a financial history. The way money was handled in your family of origin, the first time you earned your own money, the financial moments that felt scary or liberating. These experiences shape your instincts about spending and saving more than any conscious choice does.

The Foundations module helps each partner surface their own money story and understand how it shows up in the relationship. This is not about blame or analysis. It is about becoming aware of the assumptions you are both bringing to the table.

The module includes a guided reflection exercise designed to be completed individually before sharing with a partner. The sharing format is structured so that it stays curious rather than critical.

Dialogue Skills: How to Open a Money Conversation

Module 02

The way a money conversation starts often determines how it ends. Opening with a complaint or a comparison tends to put the other person on the defensive immediately. This module teaches a different opening structure.

The four-part opening format taught in this module separates the concern from the accusation. It signals that the conversation is about problem-solving, not about assigning fault. This distinction makes a significant difference in how the other person receives what you are saying.

The module also covers what to do when a conversation starts to escalate. There is a specific de-escalation pause format that can be used without either person feeling like they are shutting down the conversation.

Approximately 3 hours of material
Designed to be practiced together
Includes two conversation formats and a de-escalation guide

Advanced Formats and Working Agreements

Navigating Specific Financial Tensions

Module three provides purpose-built conversation formats for the most common financial tension points. The saver-spender dynamic. Disagreements about large purchases. Different attitudes toward debt. Different visions for the future. Each format is distinct and designed for that specific situation.

This module is the most practical in the course. You will likely find two or three formats that feel immediately relevant to where you are right now.

Closing Conversations with Working Agreements

A conversation without a clear ending often feels unresolved even if it went well. Module four teaches a simple agreement format that closes financial conversations with a documented decision that both partners feel they contributed to.

The agreement format is not a contract. It is a shared record of what you decided and why. It includes a review trigger so that agreements get revisited rather than forgotten.
